What Is Fitness?

Physical fitness is a condition of well-being and physical health and, more importantly, the capacity to do diverse parts of physical activities, jobs and sports. Ideally, physical fitness is practiced for its own sake, to attain a higher level of health, increase resistance to diseases, enhance one’s energy, reduce the risk of potential injuries and injury, increase performance and enhance sport performance. Generally, physical fitness lasts only until one’s prime, which is typically late in the 20s. Physical fitness can be developed through various means, such as regular exercise, stretching exercises, weight lifting and aerobic or anaerobic workouts, and through a healthy diet, which should include food with calories and protein.

The most important part of any fitness program is exercise. It should be a gradual and progressive training program that can be continued over long periods of time and it should be done on a regular basis. The types of exercise that you perform, i.e., the intensity and/or duration at which you perform the exercise will determine the outcome of your workout program. There are specific exercises targeted for the different parts of the body and these help to build and strengthen certain muscles. For example, during strength training, you work the muscles of your legs and arms, chest, back, abdomen, and upper legs. If you perform the exercise slowly, you will use fewer muscles when you work them out.

Aerobic exercises provide the most effective way to improve cardiovascular fitness, which will decrease the chance of having a heart attack or stroke. In general endurance exercises help to maintain the normal functions of the cardiovascular system and to strengthen the heart muscle. These types of exercises include running, cycling, swimming, and walking and include intervals, speed and alternating exercises.

Strength training is primarily used for increasing strength and building muscles. The strength training component of fitness should be performed slowly and under proper form to avoid injuries. Examples of strength exercises include push-ups, pull-ups, squats, dips, bench presses, dead lifts, shoulder presses, and stretches. Strength training can also improve cardiovascular fitness, increase bone density, and decrease risk of injury. Many professional athletes perform strength training to enhance their performance and to prevent injuries.

Nutritional supplements are often recommended for people who are trying to improve their fitness and to lose weight. The supplements can be in the form of herbal extracts, vitamins, and minerals. It is important that you consult with a physician before you begin any type of fitness program or if you have any health conditions. You should never start any type of fitness regimen without first checking with your doctor. The doctor can help you determine which type of exercise and nutritional supplements will benefit your specific needs. Your doctor may even recommend a physical activity class to help you get started with your new fitness program.
